Concrete Silo Sandblast & Paint

Concrete Silo Sandblast & Paint Project For Rapid Mix

Rapid Mix hired Industrial Painting Solutions Inc. to fix a manufacture’s paint failure. Rapid Mix Inc.  is a portable ready mix manufacture based out of Montana. This company supplies contractors with hydraulically driven concrete silos.  Gulf Atlantic is the dealer for Rapid Mix and contacted IPS concerned about a paint failure.  Gulf Atlantic sold this silo to Barnard Construction, one of the largest construction companies in the US.  As you can see in the pictures, the top coat wrinkled. After researching this cause, the problem was due to too much hardener added to the paint at the factory. This machine costs well north of a million dollars so the problem had to be rectified as soon as possible. The primer dried to fast and the top coat could not adhere to the primer.  The contract called for complete containment of the trailer portion of the silo,  a commercial blast to remove the coatings and decals, prime with Sherwin Williams Macropoxy 646, apply a top coat of Acrolon 218 polyurethane and install new decals.

Challenging Environment, But Job Completed To Specification

This job was extremely challenging due to humidity levels and love bugs. Anyone in the paint business in Florida understands both of these hurdles. With this silo being 40’ tall, there was no way to contain this structure and avoid the elements.  Love bugs stuck to both prime and top coat, which had to be sanded down multiple times and reapplied. The only way to avoid the love bugs was to paint late in the afternoon when temperatures were cooler and humidity levels were down so that is what we did.  In the end, the job turned out well and Barnard construction was happy with the end result and IPS leaned some valuable lessons about painting during love bug season.
